There are certain songs that do not need to holler, beg, or turn vocal gymnastics into an Olympic event.
They simply slide into the room, settle into the groove, and make everything feel a little better.
One of Those Days by Whitney Houston is that kind of track for me. 🎶

I have always loved this jam.
It is one of my favorite older Whitney Houston songs.
Every time it comes on, that smooth midtempo groove still hits exactly where it is supposed to.

This is Whitney relaxed, playful, grown, and completely comfortable in the pocket.
She was not trying to blow the roof off the building.
She did not need to.
Sometimes The Voice could whisper, glide, and still have everybody paying attention. 😌

One of Those Days was released in 2002 as the second single from Whitney’s fifth studio album, Just Whitney.
The song was written by Kevin She’kspere Briggs, Dwight Reynolds, and Patrice Stewart. Briggs also produced the track.
Whitney arranged her own vocals, which helps explain why the performance feels so natural and perfectly suited to her personality.

And I know you guys hear that sample.

That familiar groove comes from Between the Sheets by The Isley Brothers.
The 1983 slow jam is sampled throughout One of Those Days, which is why Ernie Isley, Marvin Isley, Chris Jasper, O’Kelly Isley Jr., Ronald Isley, and Rudolph Isley also received songwriting credit.

That warm, silky foundation gives Whitney’s record its old school soul while the production keeps it planted firmly in early 2000s R&B.
It is a smart combination.
Familiar enough to make us seasoned music lovers smile, but fresh enough that it never feels like somebody simply reheated yesterday’s leftovers. 🔥

The song itself is about recognizing when life has worn you down and deciding to take care of yourself.
Whitney sings about calling her girls, getting away from the stress, treating herself, and reclaiming her mood.
Long before everybody started talking about self-care every five minutes, Whitney was already giving us the musical version of a reset day.
Spa treatment, good friends, a little shopping, and leaving the drama at home.
Honestly, that sounds like a solid plan to me, even today. 😂🛍️

The music video follows that same idea.
Directed by Kevin Bray and filmed in Atlanta.
It shows Whitney rescuing her girlfriends from their bad days and turning the situation into a full day of relaxation and fun.
Ronald Isley makes a cameo near the end, which was the perfect nod to the Isley Brothers connection.

That was not just a sample appearance.
That felt like one generation of R&B royalty greeting another. 👑

What I appreciate most is that One of Those Days lets us hear another side of Whitney.
Everybody knows she could deliver the giant ballads and stand flat-footed while sending a note into another zip code.
But she also knew how to ride a groove.

As a DJ, I have always appreciated singers who understand that the pocket matters just as much as the power.
Whitney understood both. 🎧

More than twenty years later, this song still sounds warm, easy, and grown.
It is perfect for driving, cleaning the house, getting dressed, or simply trying to shake off one of those days.

No fireworks required.🎆
Just Whitney, The Isley Brothers, and a groove that continues to age beautifully. ❤️
