I have been riding with New Edition since the very beginning.
I am talking about the first album, Candy Girl, when they were young and energetic, giving us their own modern version of that classic Jackson 5 magic.
From Candy Girl to Mr. Telephone Man, I watched those boys grow up right along with the rest of us. 🎶
By the time If It Isn’t Love arrived in 1988, though, something had changed.
New Edition was no longer simply the cute young group singing teenage love songs.
They had grown older, their music had matured, and their sound had become stronger.
Bobby Brown had left the group to begin what would become a huge solo career, and Johnny Gill had joined Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant as the new fifth member.
And what an incredible pickup Johnny was. 🎤
I was already a Johnny Gill fan before he joined New Edition.
I loved that deep, powerful voice from the beginning.
Johnny brought a grown man’s weight to a group that had mostly been known for Ralph’s smooth, youthful tenor.
If It Isn’t Love was the first single from the album Heart Break, released in 1988.
It was written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who helped guide New Edition into a more mature and sophisticated version of themselves.
The song reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on Billboard’s R&B chart.
It also gave the group its first Top 10 pop hit after Bobby’s departure. 📻
Ralph handled the lead vocal, while Johnny sang background vocals with the rest of the group.
Johnny would receive more room to shine throughout the album, especially on Can You Stand the Rain and Boys to Men.
So while If It Isn’t Love introduced Johnny visually as part of the new lineup, it wisely kept Ralph’s familiar voice at the center of the first single.
Smart!
And let us talk about that video. 🕺🏾
That video was my video.
The concept was simple.
New Edition was shown rehearsing inside a dance studio.
Sweating through the choreography and tightening every move before heading toward the stage.
But there was nothing simple about the execution.
Those formations were crisp. Every turn, slide, shoulder movement, and foot placement looked like it belonged exactly where it landed.
The group’s longtime manager and choreographer, Brooke Payne, appears in the video guiding the rehearsal, and the whole thing became a master class in how a male vocal group should move.
They were not merely dancing behind a lead singer.
They moved as one unit.
That was traditional New Edition, and nobody did it quite like them. 🔥
The choreography became so memorable that years later Beyoncé drew from that same visual language for Love on Top.
Beyoncé said the video was inspired by male groups she loved, including New Edition, The Jackson 5, and The Temptations.
She admired their harmonies and precise choreography and wanted to capture the feeling of being part of a boy group herself.
Now that is influence. 👑
I remember mixing If It Isn’t Love when it was current.
I had an extended club version that I worked into my mixes, but honestly, I would mix the regular extended version too.
I just loved the energy of that record.
It is one of those get your butt up out of the chair songs.
The drums start rolling, the vocals come in, and your body already knows what it is supposed to do. Even if you are not planning to dance, the song starts negotiating with your feet. 😂
That love has never left. If It Isn’t Love currently sits on three of my Spotify playlists.
It is in my Personal Grind playlist, one of my Workout playlists, and one of my 80s playlists.
That tells you everything.
The record can motivate me, take me back, and still make me move in the present. 💪🏾
Earlier in 2026, all six members reunited for the New Edition Way Tour with Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton on several legs of the tour.
The show celebrated the entire family tree, including classic New Edition records, Bobby’s solo hits, Johnny’s solo catalog, Ralph’s music, and Bell Biv DeVoe.
That is the beauty of their story.
They grew separately, became successful on their own, and still found their way back to one another.
From Candy Girl to If It Isn’t Love and everything that followed, I have watched the entire journey.
And after all these years, when that drumbeat drops, I am still ready to move. 🎧
