Keyshia Cole – Love – 2006

I’ve really been in this Quiet Storm mood for a minute.
And getting music together for The Soundtrack of Who I Became – Radio, coming in January 2027, isn’t really helping me come out of it. 🤔

I’ve been going through a couple of lists, trying to pick the best of the best.
The classics.
The personal favorites.
The songs I want keeping us company late at night.

And I rolled up on this one.
Keyshia Cole’s “Love.”

Now, I ❤️ me some Keyshia Cole.
I fell in love with her from her first single.
And the gurl can DO a slow jam.
Sometimes better than artists who came before her.
Yes, I said it.

Heaven Sent
I Should Have Cheated
I Remember
Trust featuring Monica
Trust and Believe
Playa Cardz Right featuring 2Pac
Just to name a few…

I love my old school.
Y’all know that.
But I can give somebody from another generation their credit, and Keyshia earned hers.
She has a classic R&B voice.
The kind I can put alongside the singers I grew up loving and hear exactly why she belongs.

She sings like she’s been through some shit.
Or she’s working some shit out.
Sometimes both, right there in the same song. 😂

And Love gives her plenty to work with.

Before she even gets to that chorus, she’s questioning herself, looking at another woman, and wondering what this man sees in her that he couldn’t see in the woman he already had.
That’s a rough place to find yourself.
Trying to figure out what’s wrong with YOU because somebody else doesn’t know how to love you properly.

Then that chorus comes in.

And baby…
We already know we’re about to help her sing it. 🎤
The way she stretches out LLLLLOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE is practically an invitation. 🗣️
Baby, you already know we’re singing along.
Whether you can follow her through every note is another conversation.
Keyshia didn’t promise to wait for us.

But listen underneath her, too.
The steady drums keep the song moving, and those strings give it this beautiful sweep without crowding her voice.
She can pull back into a phrase, then come forward with that ache you recognize immediately.

Keyshia wrote Love with Greg Curtis, who produced it.
It first appeared on her debut album, The Way It Is, in June 2005, before becoming a single in 2006.

Love reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The Way It Is peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

And it was right there on her FIRST album.📀
She was already giving us a record we’d still be reaching for more than twenty years later.

That’s why going through these lists takes me a little time.
I’m supposed to be choosing songs.
Then something like this comes on, and now I’m listening to the whole thing.

Research has turned into a listening session.
Again. 🎧😂

But that’s part of getting this radio station together.
I want to love what I’m playing.
I want the classics in there, and I want my own favorites in there.
Records that make me look forward to being back on the air.

Keyshia lived on my Quiet Storm before.
She’ll definitely be up with me late at night on the new one.
January can’t get here fast enough.
I’ve got music to play and some late nights to share with y’all. 💜

I promise my next selection will be something upbeat.

Let me get through this Keyshia first.
