Duets Volume One

I love a good duet. ❤️🎶

There’s just something about hearing two voices come together and somehow become one.
And I don’t necessarily mean two singers who sound alike. Sometimes it’s the exact opposite.
It’s the contrast between the voices that makes the magic happen.

This afternoon I was listening to my Duets playlist, and somewhere along the way I thought, Wait a minute.
I need to do a Soundtrack post about this.

So let me make something clear before somebody comes for me in the comments. 😂
These are NOT my greatest duets of all time.
They aren’t even my Top 8.
That list is coming later, and trust me, choosing those is going to be a whole situation.

These are simply a handful of my favorites that I happened to listen to today.
And I just wanted to share what I was listening to.

🎧 Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey • When You Believe • 1998
Come on now. Whitney AND Mariah? 👑👑 I’m already there.
Written by Stephen Schwartz for The Prince of Egypt, with Babyface contributing additional music and lyrics to the pop version, this was the pairing people had been waiting for.
The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
And since Whitney is Whitney to me, you already know this one wasn’t getting skipped.

✨ Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle • A Whole New World • 1992
Disney gave us the movie, but Peabo and Regina gave grown folks the version we could put on the stereo.
Written by Alan Menken and Tim Rice, their version became a No. 1 hit and won Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

🔥 Brandy & Monica • The Boy Is Mine • 1998
Now THIS was an event.
Brandy’s smoother, layered delivery against Monica’s stronger, churchier attack is exactly why it works.
Written by Brandy, Rodney Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Fred Jerkins III and Japhe Tejeda, it became one of the defining R&B records of the late 90s.

❤️ Lionel Richie & Diana Ross • Endless Love • 1981
Sometimes you don’t need vocal fireworks. You need chemistry. Lionel wrote this for the movie Endless Love, and he and Diana turned it into something much bigger than the film.
It spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

🎬 Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper • Shallow • 2018
This is exactly why my playlists don’t live inside one little box.
Gaga can SANG, and Bradley Cooper surprised the hell out of me. 😂
Their chemistry in A Star Is Born makes the song feel less like two celebrities recording a duet and more like we’re eavesdropping on two people falling into each other.
Shallow won both an Oscar and Grammys.

💋 Babyface & Toni Braxton • Give U My Heart • 1992
Babyface and Toni? Please.
You already know I’m stopping what I’m doing. 😏
From the Boomerang soundtrack, Give U My Heart was written by Babyface, L.A. Reid, Daryl Simmons and Bo Watson.
It also helped introduce the world to that unmistakable Toni Braxton voice before her debut album arrived.

💔 Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald • On My Own • 1986
Two powerhouse voices singing about a relationship falling apart, and here’s the crazy part: Patti and Michael recorded their parts separately.
They reportedly didn’t meet until later.
Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager wrote and produced it, and the song went all the way to No. 1.

🥃 Beyoncé & Jay-Z • Drunk in Love • 2013
And this one is an entirely different kind of duet. 😂
Husband and wife, R&B and hip hop, sensuality and swagger.
It’s messy, sexy, hypnotic and unmistakably Beyoncé and Jay.

That’s what I love about duets.

Sometimes the voices blend beautifully.
Sometimes they challenge each other.
Sometimes one voice is silk and the other has some grit.
But when the pairing is right, you don’t hear two people anymore.
You hear one song.

And trust me, my Duets playlist has plenty more where these came from.

Volume 2 is definitely coming. 🎶
