Sometimes I don’t need an event.
I don’t need plans.
I don’t need to be anywhere.
Sometimes I just need a little sumthin sumthin 🚬.
Some good music 🎶, my television, and a whole bunch of people falling down on YouTube. 😂
Tonight was one of those nights.
I made myself a new YouTube playlist called Extended Versions Favz: Volume One, and if you know me, you already know how I feel about an extended version.
I love remixes, but extended versions hold their own special place in my musical heart. ❤️
There’s something about hearing a song you’ve known forever and suddenly getting another four minutes of it.
A longer intro.
An instrumental break.
Extra percussion.
A breakdown you forgot existed. Sometimes the groove just gets to breathe.
And THAT is my kind of carrying on. 😎
This playlist is basically me crate-digging through my own musical brain.
I started with Earth, Wind & Fire and Fantasy, specifically the nine-minute Shelter DJ Mix.
The original came from 1977’s All ’n All, was written by Maurice White, Verdine White and Eddie del Barrio, and produced by Maurice White.
Even the original feels like it’s taking you somewhere.
Give me nine minutes of it and child, I’m going. 🚀
Then Swing Out Sister slides in with Breakout (The N.A.D. Mix), followed by Terence Trent D’Arby and Wishing Well (12″ The Cool In The Shade Mix).
That one still has one of the coolest grooves of the late 80s.
Terence co wrote it with Sean Oliver and co produced it with Martyn Ware.
Apparently, he said the song came to him while he was in that space between sleeping and waking.
That actually makes perfect sense because Wishing Well has always had that slightly dreamy, funky quality to it.
Then I’ve got Paul Hardcastle doing Rain Forest (Ben Liebrand Extended Edit)
George Benson giving me Give Me the Night (Disco Purrfection Version).
And Rick Astley with Never Gonna Give You Up. (Disco Purrfection Version).
And yes, Rick gets almost nine minutes. 😂
Nearly 40 years later, I still ❤️ to move to this track.
Then things get even more ridiculous in the best possible way.
The Jacksons with Can You Feel It. (SWG Extended Mix).
You know I 💜 SWG mixes!
Whitney Houston with So Emotional (Extended Remix).
Enigma with Sadeness (Full Version).
Phil Collins with Sussudio (Extended Remix).
Madonna with Papa Don’t Preach (Extended Remix)
And finally Donna Summer with an eight minute I Feel Love [Long Version]
Come ON now. 🔥
And that Donna record is especially important.
I Feel Love came from 1977’s I Remember Yesterday, written by Donna, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte and produced by Moroder and Bellotte.
That futuristic electronic pulse sounded like tomorrow arriving early.
Nearly fifty years later, it STILL doesn’t sound old.
That’s what I love about extended versions.
They remind me of when music wasn’t scared to take its damn time.
A song didn’t always have to get in, get the hook out and disappear.
Give me an eight minute version.
Hell, give me nine.
If the groove is right, where exactly do I have to be? 🤷🏾♂️🎧
Tonight I didn’t need much.
A little herb. 🌿
My music.
Some hilarious YouTube fails on the TV.
And absolutely nowhere I needed to be.
I need more evenings like this.
Not every memory that becomes part of your soundtrack has to be some huge life changing moment. Sometimes happiness is sitting right there in the quiet little spaces.
You just have to press play.
