I was driving to the grocery store today, just letting my playlist do its thing, when Loose Ends came on.
OMG… I had forgotten just how much of a jam Hangin’ On a String (Contemplating) really is. 🎶
Man… this is such a classic.
Released in 1985 from the album So Where Are You, this wasn’t just another smooth R&B record.
It made history by becoming the first song by a British R&B group to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart in the United States.
That’s a pretty amazing accomplishment that doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough.
Loose Ends consisted of Carl McIntosh, Jane Eugene, and Steve Nichol, and together they created one of the smoothest sounds of the decade.
The song was written by the group alongside Philadelphia producer Nick Martinelli, whose signature production gave it that perfect blend of British soul and classic Philly R&B.
One of the things I’ve always loved about this record is how real it feels.
Carl and Jane don’t just sing the lyrics; they sound like two people trying to save a relationship that’s slipping away.
It’s honest, relatable, and still connects almost forty years later.
And that groove.🎼
That bass line is absolutely infectious.
As a DJ, I can tell you this is one of those songs where the first few notes are all it takes.
Heads start nodding before the vocals even come in.🗣️
What impresses me most is how well the production has aged.
The layered harmonies, the keyboards, and the rhythm still sound incredibly fresh today.
Great music doesn’t expire; it just finds new listeners.
While Loose Ends never reached the superstar status of some of their peers in the U.S., they earned the respect of R&B fans everywhere with classics like Magic Touch, Slow Down, and Watching You.
I like Watching You probably a little more than Hanging On A String.
They’re both classics though.
I need to mix one of them into something relevant.
Maybe something 80’s.
But they are the reason I love sharing songs like this on The Soundtrack of Who I Became.
Sometimes the soundtrack of our lives isn’t made up of the biggest hits.
Sometimes it’s the songs that quietly became part of who we are.
