Been listening to this album for the last couple of days.
Felt appropriate.
And honestly, that says a lot. đ§
Marvin Gayeâs Whatâs Going On came out in 1971.
But listening to it now, I keep thinking about how familiar it all feels.
War.
Police brutality.
Racism.
Poverty.
Division.
The world Marvin was singing about feels awfully close to the one weâre living in.
His brother Frankie Gayeâs experiences in Vietnam helped shape the albumâs perspective.
And the title song, written with Renaldo Benson and Al Cleveland, grew from questions about war and police violence.
There was real pain behind this music.
You can hear it.
But you can hear the love too. â€ïž
Thatâs what gets me about Marvin.
He could put something so heavy inside music that sounded so beautiful.
The groove pulls you in.
Then you start paying attention to what heâs actually saying.
And suddenly, youâre listening differently.
This album still feels current.
It feels like now.
Same pain.
Same divisions.
Different decade.
I love that music can remain this powerful after all these years.
But damnâŠ
I wish more of what he was singing about felt like history. đ
Thatâs timeless music.
And a question we still havenât answered.
Whatâs Going On?
