Father’s Day is one of those holidays that hits everybody differently.
For some people, it’s backyard cookouts, phone calls, and family pictures.
For others like Me…
It’s memories.
Quiet moments.
Conversations you wish you could have one more time. 📱❤️
Whenever I think about songs that perfectly capture that mixture of love, gratitude, and longing, one song rises above almost everything else.
Luther Vandross’ Dance With My Father.
Released in 2003 on his self-titled album Dance with My Father, the song became one of the most emotional and personal records of Luther’s legendary career.
Written by Luther Vandross and Richard Marx and produced by Luther, along with Nat Adderley Jr.
The song earned the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2004.
What makes this record so powerful is that it wasn’t fiction.
Luther’s father, Luther Vandross Sr., died from complications related to diabetes when Luther was just eight years old.
Years later, Luther reflected on memories of watching his father dance with his mother and how much joy those moments brought into their home.
The song became his way of preserving those memories and expressing a wish that so many people understand.
Just one more dance.
Richard Marx later recalled that writing the song with Luther was one of the most emotional experiences of his career.
Luther became deeply moved while recording it because the memories were so real and so personal.
Sadly, the song arrived during one of the most difficult periods of Luther’s life.
Shortly after completing the album, he suffered a severe stroke in April 2003.
Because of his health, Luther was unable to appear in the music video.
So director Diane Martel and Luther created a visual tribute that spoke through memories instead of performances.
They included photographs and home footage of celebrities and everyday people with their fathers.

As someone whose favorite male vocalist has always been Luther Vandross;
This song stops me every single time.
It doesn’t matter how many times I hear it.
Those lyrics still hit.
So today, I want to wish a Happy Father’s Day.
To all the fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, and father figures who stepped up and made a difference.
And to everyone carrying beautiful memories in their hearts, may those memories continue to dance with you.
And for those whose fathers are no longer here, songs like this become bridges between yesterday and today. 🎵💙🙏🏾
