Luther Vandross – Every Year, Every Christmas – 1995

by djzyonseven

“Every Year, Every Christmas” isn’t just a song to me — it’s a feeling that I never learned how to leave.
A love that lingered quietly, year after year.

Luther gave voice to that kind of hope.
The kind that waits, believes, and keeps coming back no matter how much time has passed.

I’ve been there.
This song belongs to me.
For me, it’s about my first love.
PJ.

We were high school sweethearts.
Seniors.
Each other’s first.

Even when the world, mainly our parents, said ‘no’ back in high school in ’87, we quietly found comfort in each other.
In other words, we snuck around a lot.
We continued that rendezvous for about a decade.

We even tried to date other people, but always found our way back to each other.
We even stepped out on our relationships to be together.
So wrong.
So messy.

When we were together, it felt like magic, like home.
Again, high school sweethearts, who thought we would always be together.
Of all my loves, he made me feel the most loved. I truly believed we’d get our fairytale.

But some loves aren’t meant to last.
They’re meant to mark you.
To teach you.

The late 80’s and early 90’s were different.
Love and acceptance were really complicated for a gay young couple.
Our love story was definitely that.
I’ll leave it there for now.

I eventually moved on, but part of my heart has always stayed with him.
This will always be a song that reminds me of him and our last Christmas together.
And it’s fitting that this masterpiece came from Luther.

Merry Christmas!
