Welcome back to the 80s.
Not the watered-down version.
Not the playlist that only gives you the same ten songs everybody already knows.
I’m talking about the real 80s.
The era when R&B radio had personality.
When DJs knew how to set the mood.
When a slow jam could stop you in your tracks, and a funky bassline could have you moving before you even realized you were dancing. 📻✨
Growing up, these songs ruled the airwaves from 1980 to 1989.
This was the soundtrack coming through the radio, the car speakers, the boom boxes, the cassette decks, the house parties, the skating rinks, and the clubs.
This was back when music had texture.
Everybody had their own sound.
Nobody was trying to sound like everybody else.
That is one of the things I miss most about music from that era.
There was room for the funky stuff.
There was room for the quiet storm.
There was room for dance music, soul music, synth-heavy grooves, and grown-folks slow jams.
And the DJs knew how to bring all of it together.
That is what I wanted to capture with this mix.
🎧 1980s R&B Soul Radio Mix 1 is my personal ride through the music that helped shape my ears, my taste, and eventually my own style as a DJ.
Some of these songs were major hits.
Some are deep cuts.
Some are forgotten gems that deserve to be heard again.
And some of them will probably take you right back to a specific place, a specific person, or a specific moment in your life.
That is the power of music.
A song can unlock a memory faster than a photograph.
You hear the first few notes, and suddenly you are back in somebody’s living room, riding in somebody’s car, standing under the lights at a skating rink, or listening to late-night radio when you were supposed to be asleep.
That is the kind of feeling I wanted this mix to bring back. 💿🔥
This is not just a collection of songs.
It is a radio experience.
Back when DJs set the vibe, and the music told a story.
Back when the person behind the turntables understood pacing.
You had to know when to lift the energy, when to slow things down, when to slide in a record people forgot they loved, and when to let a groove breathe.
That is the difference between playing music and curating a moment.
And that is always my goal.
I want you to hear songs you remember.
I also want you to hear a few songs that make you say, “Wait a minute, I forgot about this one.”
Because those are the moments that make a mix special.
Those are the records that hit the nostalgia bone in the best possible way. 😎🎵
